Plan a Road Trip with Multi-Modal Stops
Road trips rarely stick to a single mode of transport. You might drive most of the route, catch a night train between two cities, and take a ferry across a strait. Smooth Traveling's Route tab is built for this: a sequence of stops connected by colour-coded transport segments, each with space for operator details and booking references.

Switch to Road Trip mode
When creating a new trip, select Road trip as the trip mode. If you've already created a trip in Flight mode, change it from the Overview tab. Switching to Road Trip mode enables the Route tab.
- 2
Open the Route tab
Inside your trip, click the Route tab. You'll see a vertical timeline starting with your origin. Each stop is a card showing the location name and dates; the connecting segments represent each leg of travel.
Tip: The Route tab covers the logistics of getting between places. Use the Itinerary tab for day-by-day activities, meals, and accommodation at each stop. - 3
Add stops
Click Add stop to insert a new waypoint. Give it a name — a city, a town, a national park, anywhere you'll spend meaningful time. Set the arrival and departure dates. The stop card will show how many nights you're spending there so you can see your pacing at a glance.

Set the transport segment between stops
Each gap between two stops has a transport segment. Click the segment to choose your mode — Drive, Train, Bus, Ferry, or Car rental — then fill in the operator, booking reference, and departure and arrival times.
Tip: For trains and buses, the operator name (e.g. Renfe, FlixBus) and service number make it easy to look up the booking later. For car rentals, the confirmation number and pickup location are the most important fields. - 5
Review and reorder
Scroll through the full route to see the complete journey from start to finish. If your plans change, you can delete a stop or adjust the dates and transport details on any segment.
